RIO GRANDE GORGE BRIDGE

US HWY 64, TAOS COUNTY, NM

The Rio Grande Gorge Bridge is a national landmark that won the American Institute of Steel Construction award for the “Most Beautiful Steel Bridge” in the Long Span category in 1966. Over the years, however, the original structural design of this beautiful New Mexico landmark has unfortunately lent itself to many human suicides, and extreme weathering has placed the bridge in a dire need of renovation. M+Y sees a great need to transform the bridge to attract more tourists and ensure their safety at the same time. As part of a public participation process held by the NM Department of Transportation, M+Y developed a strategy for the bridge and immediate environs to include a Suicide Deterrent System, Enhanced Visitor Safety, Windscreen, and a Site Master Plan for future development.
