UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO CORONADO HALL PHASE III
ALBUQUERQUE, NM
The University of New Mexico boasts a historic campus dotted with numerous buildings that have served as the cornerstone of higher education in the state for 134 years. Among these, student housing dormitories play a crucial role in accommodating students from various parts of New Mexico and beyond. Coronado Hall, dating back to 1959, stands as one of the oldest dormitories on campus, offering students residential opportunities since its inception.
McClain + Yu undertook the renovation of this esteemed UNM building, embarking on three distinct design phases to revitalize its interior and communal spaces. Recognizing the historical significance of Coronado Hall, McClain + Yu balanced preservation with the integration of modern aesthetics and technology to meet current student needs. Phase III of the renovation focused extensively on enhancing the lobby and bathroom facilities. The lobby, serving as the central gathering place for students to study, socialize, cook, and host events, underwent meticulous redesign to accommodate these varied activities. Upgrades included the installation of ceiling-mounted sound baffles, flooring enhancements, improved kitchen amenities, strategic wall modifications, and optimized space utilization. These enhancements aim to foster a vibrant and supportive environment where students can thrive academically, socially, and personally.
