UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO HOSPITAL CHILDREN’S PSYCHIATRIC CENTER

ALBUQUERQUE, NM

McClain + Yu was approached to design a new inpatient facility for the UNMH Children’s Psychiatric Hospital to elevate mental health care and awareness in New Mexico. Situated on UNM’s North Campus, the existing facilities span across 11 separate buildings, presenting challenges for both staff and children. The focal point of the design is the creation of a consolidated inpatient building aimed at enhancing campus connectivity, optimizing facility efficiency, and establishing a secure, welcoming environment. Spanning a single story and 32,500 square feet, the structure incorporates 36 patient beds in singles and doubles, a central dining area, and interactive communal spaces throughout the site. Upgrades to the hospital were meticulously planned to accommodate future expansions, ensure optimal program adjacencies, and streamline building circulation, thus enhancing overall UNMH operations. The new facility introduces critical updates tailored to current and future needs of New Mexico’s children, cultivating a healing environment that engages their interests while meeting their healthcare requirements.
