The University of New Mexico Hospital/Bernalillo County Behavioral Health Crisis Center provides a unique continuum of care approach to behavioral health facilities — addressing a spectrum of acuity levels and needs: outpatient, medium-acuity and emergency psychiatric services. Working with the owner team, McClain + Yu went to great lengths to employ the use of trauma-informed design and materials to form a therapeutic environment for behavioral health care. Examples of the approach included the use of calming colors, visually ordered environments, daylighting and outdoor space, and naturalistic materials. Specialty elements were used to meet a residential appearance while maintaining institutional level quality and performance.
